Mohegan Sun Arena

Hello everybody!

I had so much fun writing about Foxwoods Resort Casino last week, I figured I would do something similar this week!

If you’re wondering what I mean, this blog post is going to be covering the other major casino and entertainment complex in Connecticut: Mohegan Sun Arena! 

It is located on 240 acres of the Mohegan Indian Reservation in Uncasville, Connecticut along the banks of the Thames River. It also features two hotel towers with more than 1,500 rooms, a large retail and dining promenade, a spa, a 100,000 square foot convention center, more than 364,000 square feet of gaming space with over 6,500 slot machines, 370 table games, a race book, and a 10,000 seat multi-purpose venue.

This is going to be interesting for me to write about because there is so much for me to talk about. I mean, much like Foxwoods, it also has a lot of restaurants and exciting upcoming shows, but there are also some other things it has that are unique to it that I will talk about right now.

The first notable part of the Mohegan Sun Arena is the fact that it serves as the home court for the Connecticut Sun in the WNBA, whose season is currently going on right now, and will also go until September.

Another very interesting part of the complex happens every August in the Convention Center. It’s called Terrificon, and it is the Connecticut version of Comic Con, complete with celebrity guests. While some of them are obscure voice actors, there are also some fairly notable names that will be guests.

Some of the celebrities that will be there include Ron Perlman from Hellboy and Sons Of Anarchy, Priscilla Presley, the former wife of Elvis who is also famous for starring in the Naked Gun movies, Diedrich Bader from The Drew Carey Show, Office Space, and Napoleon Dynamite, Charisma Carpenter from Buffy The Vampire Slayer, and one that I’m sure many of you are familiar with, but don’t actually realize it: Patrick Warburton. He is known for starring in shows like Seinfeld, The Tick, and Rules Of Engagement, but that’s probably not where some of you know him from. You probably know him from his extremely extensive voice actor work, as he has voiced characters in almost everything you can think of, with the two most famous roles being Kronk in The Emperor’s New Groove and Joe Swanson in Family Guy.

They have also had some other notable celebrities as guests in the past. These include Anthony Michael Hall from The Breakfast Club, Billy Dee Williams from Star Wars, Billy Zane from Titanic, Burt Ward from 1960s Batman, Chazz Palminteri from A Bronx Tale, Chris Sullivan from This Is Us, Cobie Smulders from How I Met Your Mother and the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Erik Estrada from CHiPS, Henry Winkler from Happy Days and so many other things, Jerry O’Connell from Stand By Me and so many modern things, Jim Cummings, AKA the voice of Winnie The Pooh, actual living legend Keanu Reeves, Ke Huy Quan from Indiana Jones And The Temple Of Doom, The Goonies, and Everything Everywhere All At Once, Kevin Smith from Clerks, Lou Ferrigno from The Incredible Hulk from the 1970s, Michael Rooker from The Walking Dead and Guardians Of The Galaxy, Ralph Macchio from The Karate Kid, Rebecca Romijn from The X-Men Movies, Sean Gunn from Guardians Of The Galaxy and Gilmore Girls, and Val Kilmer from Top Gun and Batman Forever.

So, yeah. All these people have been guests or are going to be guests at Terrificon at Mohegan Sun. 

Now, let’s head over to the restaurants!

The first restaurant that I am going to talk about is Beauty & Essex, which is not only a restaurant, it is also a pawn shop, which is the most unique combination of businesses I think I have ever seen in my life. Maybe they chose that location for a pawn shop because it will encourage people to continue gambling at the casino.

The first interesting dish they have is Little French Dip Sandwiches with Slow Roasted Sirloin, Gruyere Cheese, Horseradish-Garlic Aioli, and House Made Au Jus.

The next dish they have is Rhode Island Lobster Roll with Sturgeon Caviar.

The next dish they have is Grilled Shishito Peppers with Lemon Harissa Vinaigrette, Sesame Seeds, Turmeric Spiced Yogurt, and Mint.

The next dish they have is Crispy Barrio-Style Chicken Taquitos with Roasted Guajillo Sauce, Avocado, and Crema.

The next dish they have is Grilled Cheese & Tomato Soup Dumplings with Smoked Bacon and Chives.

The next dish they have is Fried Whole Belly Clams with Truffle Tartar Sauce.

The next dish they have is Wood Grilled Lamb Chops with Herb Roasted Potatoes, Glazed Baby Carrots, Sweet Pea Puree, and Lemon Scented Balsamic Demi.

The next dish they have is Chicken Parmesan with Spaghetti, Andouille Sausage Butter, and Cherry Tomatoes. 

The last dish they have is Veal Milanese with Spaghetti, Arugula, Lemon Vinaigrette, and Shaved Pecorino.

Now let’s get into the shows they have coming up! 

The first show they have on May 17 is 90s R&B group Blackstreet, who are famous for the song No Diggity.

The next show they have on May 23 is Charlie Puth, and though I know he had some songs in the late 2010s, I can’t think of a single thing he has done in recent years. Seriously, does anybody know any of his recent songs?

The next show they have on May 29 is pop group 5 Seconds Of Summer, and even though they are performing at such a huge venue like this one, I can literally only name one song by them. It’s Youngblood, by the way.

The next show they have on May 30 is 80s soft rock duo Air Supply, who are famous for songs like All Out Of Love. I am just going to say this right now: performing at Mohegan Sun is such a massive step up for a group that typically performs at venues like Flagstar At Westbury Music Fair and The Palace Theatre in Stamford, which funny enough, is where they will be performing in September.

The next show they have on June 4 is Teddy Swims, and I don’t think he needs any introduction because I’m sure all of you reading know who he is.

The next show they have on June 18 is Lauren Daigle, who is famous for the song You Say, and I guess she has more songs, because she is performing here.

The next show they have on June 21 is country singer Tucker Wetmore, and I didn’t even need to look up any information about him to know he was a country singer, or even just look at the promotional picture of him in a cowboy hat to know he was a country singer. I could tell because he has such a country singer name.

The next show they have on June 27 and June 28 is Blue Man Group, because apparently they are still a thing.

The next show they have on July 12 is The Pussycat Dolls with Lil Kim and Mya. Wait, something doesn’t seem right. Hang on, let me just look at this a little closer… Oh of course, that’s when the show was going to be, but they cancelled the whole tour, because like many other artists in recent times, they booked venues that they were not big enough to sell out.

The next show they have on July 15 is Weird Al Yankovic with Puddles Pity Party. Fun fact: A few years ago, Weird Al Yankovic was performing at Ridgefield Playhouse and other small venues, and now he is performing at some of the biggest venues imaginable. It’s kind of hard for me to say that his popularity grew, because he was already very popular, nor was he a rising star, because he got his start in the 80s.

The next show they have on July 16 is The Guess Who with Don Felder from The Eagles. Okay, I just have to say it. How are they able to sell enough tickets here and everywhere else they are performing, but The Pussycat Dolls have to cancel their whole tour? Are there enough old people in the world that are fans of them and still know who they are? 

The next show they have on July 17 is some rock band called Shinedown with some other rock band called Coheed And Cambria. I don’t know. Maybe they’re popular, maybe you guys have heard of them, but I certainly haven’t.

The next show they have on July 19 is Frankie Valli & The Four Seasons, and I’m really sorry to say this, but you should not spend any money buying tickets to this show. I have seen footage of his recent shows, and he is mostly just standing there with a blank expression on his face and trying to lip sync to songs, so unless you find something so sad to be so funny, don’t go to this show.

The next show they have on July 26 is Derek Hough, which will have a lot of dancing, but I don’t know how much singing it will have.

The next show they have on July 31 is Blues Traveler with Gin Blossoms and Spin Doctors, and between all three of them, I can only name on of their songs. It’s Two Princes, in case you were wondering.

The next show they have on August 8 is Billy Idol, who will be there as part of his tour called It’s A Nice Day To Tour Again. And yes, the reason why I included that was so that all of you reading would get White Wedding stuck in your heads. 

The next show they have on August 14 is Brandi Carlile, and while I am aware that she is kind of a big deal, literally the only song of hers that I know is The Story, and that’s only because it was performed on The Masked Singer.

The next show they have on August 22 is 2010s pop goddess Kesha, who will be joined by Erika Jayne from The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills, who is also a DJ under the name DJ Pretty Mess.

The next show they have on August 28 is for all you hip hop R&B girl group fans out there: TLC with Salt-N-Pepa and En Vogue.

The next show they have on September 4 and September 5 is comedian Matt Rife, who is apparently somehow one of the biggest comedians in the world I guess. Also, I cannot take him seriously, because his promotional poster is literally stylized after Billy Idol’s Greatest Hits album cover. Seriously, what’s the point of this? It doesn’t look cool, it just looks weird. And yes, his hair and even his mouth look like Billy Idol’s on the poster.

The next show they have on September 6 is Goo Goo Dolls with Neon Trees, which I find interesting, as they are from two completely different time periods, as Goo Goo Dolls are from the 90s, while Neon Trees are from the early 2010s.

The next show they have on September 12 is ZZ Top with George Thorogood And The Destroyers, and for those of you who don’t know who they are, I am almost positive that you do. You definitely have seen images of a rock band with guys that have beards for days, and you definitely know that opening guitar intro to Bad To The Bone. In fact, some of you probably even heard it as you were reading this.

The next show they have on September 19 is one of the best winners of The Masked Singer: Boyz II Men.

The next show they have on October 30 and November 1 is a big one: legendary rock band Rush, who are hitting the road again following the death of drummer Neil Peart. I will admit I’m not the biggest fan of Rush, mostly because of Geddy Lee’s weird helium voice.

The last show they have on November 19 and November 21 is another big one, and this one is in support of the 25th Anniversary of the arena: Metallica, who are performing in Connecticut for the first time since 1996, and will have two different set lists for both shows. Also, the first show will have the cutely named Suicidal Tendencies as opening act, and the second show will have Spiritbox as opening act.

Overall, there is a lot of cool things coming up here, and a lot of cool stuff to do here, so get in your car and go make a big journey to upstate Connecticut to see some amazing shows and have some amazing food!
