First Day Hikes

If you are looking for a fun way to kick off the new year, go enjoy some First Day Hikes at any park in New York state! All day long on January 1, there will be guided hikes at some of the most famous parks around the state.

For my readers who live in Long Island, there are several places where you can go on guided hikes in the region. One of these hikes will be at Camp Hero State Park in Montauk, which will take guests through its landscape of heavily wooded trails and unique birdlife within a historic military installation, where guests will learn about its history. The hike will start at 9:00 and will last at least two hours and is also between three and four miles long. There will also be a hike at Robert Moses State Park in Babylon, which will be a walk along the beach where guests will be looking for seals and winter birds. This hike starts at 9:30 and will be approximately 2-4 miles long. There will also be a hike at Bethpage State Park, where guests will be looking for signs of the wildlife that live there, which will start at 10:00 and is 5 miles long. There will also be a hike at Camusett State Historic Park Preserve in Huntington, that will take visitors through the fields and the forest of the park and will start at 10:00. There will also be a hike at Hallock State Park Preserve in Riverhead, which will consist of looking for sea turtles and cleaning up the beach, and it will begin at 10:00. There will also be a hike at the Jones Beach Energy & Nature Center in Wantagh, where guests can learn all about the seals that visit Long Island, and it will start at 10:00.

There are also going to be some parks in Westchester and the surrounding area that will be having First Day Hikes. One of them is at Rockefeller State Park Preserve in Pleasantville, which is a walk along the Hudson River across the landscape of Rockwood Hall. The tour guide will also be keeping an eye out for winter birds including bald eagles and red-tailed hawks that are often seen in the preserve. The hike will go from 9:00-11:00 and is 1.5 miles long. There is also going to be a hike at Franklin D. Roosevelt State Park in Yorktown, where you will learn all sorts of facts about the place from the tour guides. It starts at 10:00 and is 2 miles long. There is also going to be a hike at the Hudson Highlands State Park Preserve in Cold Spring, which goes from 11:00-2:00, where guests can either take a naturalist-led hike around Little Stony Point, which is 1 mile, or hike to nearby historic Cornish Estate, which is a 3-mile round-trip. There is also going to be a hike at Walkway Over the Hudson that will start at both the Poughkeepsie and Highland entrances and will go from 1:00-3:00. There is also going to be a hike at the Old Croton Aqueduct State Historic Park in Cortlandt that starts at 1:00, which will discuss the history and construction of the aqueduct and the features of the Croton Dam. There is also going to be a hike that I might go to at John Jay Homestead Historic Site in Katonah, which is going to be a guided tour of the property that shows all the different features developed by the different generations of the Jay family. It goes from 1:00-3:00, and people who have dogs are allowed to bring them as long as they are on leashes.

So, go ahead and start off the new year with a nice hike at a park near you!
