Maritime Aquarium

If you are looking for a fun place to go with your whole family in Connecticut, head over to the Maritime Aquarium in Norwalk!

This is an aquarium that is 140,000 square feet, has more than 177,000 gallons of water in its habitats, has 300 different species, and 2,700 animals. Some of the animals include harbor seals, river otters, sharks, and jellyfish. The aquarium also has several touch tanks for some of their animals and a 4-D movie theater.

They have many exhibits throughout the aquarium featuring many different animals that you can learn a variety of facts about. One of these exhibits is a sturgeon touch tank that is 32 feet long, contains 7,000 gallons of water, and informs people about what the Earth was like 200 million years ago.

There is also a meerkat exhibit that used to be on the first floor of the aquarium, but recently moved to the second floor. This new exhibit is twice the size of the original one, replicates their native habitat of the African desert, and has three viewing bubbles that give guests the chance to pop up right among the meerkats.

There is also Pinniped Cove, a recent addition that opened in June 2021. It is home to the aquarium’s eight harbor seals, one of which was born on April 5 of this year. This exhibit is also the largest one at the aquarium, and it also lets you follow the seals from three sides and two levels, which are underwater at floor-to-ceiling windows on the first floor, and above the surface on the second floor. This exhibit also explains the success of seal conservation in New England, and lets guests watch them get fed three times a day.

Another exhibit at the aquarium that stands out is one called Just Add Water, which features animals such as lizards, skunks, porcupines, and tamarin monkeys. This exhibit focuses on different biomes that have adapted to certain climates, and guests can learn about how these climates are created or influenced by the ocean.

There are also a variety of touch tanks at the aquarium that kids might enjoy. One of these is a tank that has nurse sharks and stingrays that people can safely run their fingers across the top of. Kids will also have the opportunity to sign up to feed the stingrays. Another fun touch tank is called Jiggle-a-Jelly. This is where an aquarium volunteer will guide you in touching the tops of moon jellies, which will not sting you.

The aquarium also has a 4D theater, which used to be an IMAX theater. Over the next few months, the theater will be showing two movies. One of them is a movie that explains how an octopus uses physical and mental strengths to outwit and escape its underwater rivals. The other movie they will be showing, from November 2 to January 1, is a 13-minute version of the animated movie “The Polar Express.”

So go buy your tickets and go to one of the best places in Connecticut!
