Summer In The Park

Image
As some of you might remember, last year I wrote about the outdoor summer concert series in Stamford Downtown called Alive At Five. Well, back in November of last year, it was announced that it would never be returning. I was disappointed by this news, but also hopeful that the city of Stamford would come up with an exciting new event. A few weeks ago, Hey Stamford announced that a new event would be coming to Mill River Park called Summer In The Park, which would be happening on three weekends in July. I didn’t know what to expect at this point in time, as I didn’t know if they would want to go big for its first year, or if they would want to take a year off after cancelling Alive At Five before going big again next year. A few days ago, I found my answer, and it was announced that this event is going to be one of the biggest events Stamford has had in a while! In this blog post, I will be discussing everything that is in store for the event this year, in hopes that it will encourage ...

Chappaqua Farmers Market

Image
It’s been a while since I have written about a nearby event, so I figured now would be the perfect time to do so! Since we are currently in the summer, I felt it was appropriate to write about a farmers market in the area, and since I haven’t written about it yet, today I am going to talk about the Chappaqua Farmers Market. I will be going over all the vendors that participate in it, in hopes that it will encourage all of you reading to check it out.  The first few vendors that I will talk about fall under the category of Specialty.  The first vendor is a knife sharpener from Hastings-on-Hudson that is only there on the second Saturday of every month called Ready, Set, Sharp. The next vendor is The Copper Faucet Soap from White Plains, which sells handcrafted soaps. The next vendor is The Wreath Forager from Hastings-on-Hudson, which makes and sells wreaths.  The last Specialty vendor is Wendy Enoch Pottery from Hastings-on-Hudson, which makes and sells ceramics and is on...

City Island

Image
Today I am going to write about one of the most interesting places I have ever been to, City Island! This is a neighborhood in the northeastern Bronx that is located on an island of the same name that is approximately 1.5 miles long by 0.5 miles wide, and is located at the extreme western end of Long Island Sound, south of Pelham Bay Park, and east of Eastchester Bay. In this blog post, I will be discussing some of the unique features here, the unique businesses, and the restaurants here as well, in hopes that all of you reading will want to check it out.  One interesting fact about the island is that at one time, the island was incorporated within the boundaries of the town of Pelham in Westchester County, but it has been part of New York City since the late 19th century. Another interesting fact about City Island is that anyone who is actually born on the island is known as a clam digger, while a resident who was not born on the island is known as a mussel sucker.  One of th...

Harbor Point

Image
Today, I am going to talk about one of the most fascinating places in the area, Harbor Point in Stamford! This is a redevelopment located in the South End of Stamford, has approximately 2,750 new housing units as of January 2021, with plans to bring that number up to 4,000 total housing units, and includes office buildings, restaurants, parks, and a boardwalk. It is also made up of five distinct areas that are each centered on a park or waterfront feature. In this blog post, I will be discussing its history, its current features, and restaurants that are located there.  Harbor Point was historically used for industrial purposes, and it was dominated by the Yale & Towne Lock Works, which first located to the area in 1868. The company helped fuel the area’s economic growth, dominated the economy of Stamford, employing 25% of its population at one point, and it would hold this position for over 50 years, which also gave Stamford the nickname “Lock City.”  Starting in 2005, a ...

Lake Compounce

Image
In today’s blog post, I will be discussing one of the most historic places not only in Connecticut, but also the United States, Lake Compounce Amusement Park! This is the oldest continuously operating amusement park in the United States, spans 365 acres, has 44 attractions, and includes a beach and a water park. In this blog post, I will be discussing the park’s history, the attractions there, and the many other features there in hopes that it will encourage all of you reading to visit it. The park’s history goes all the way back to 1846, when a man named Gad Norton hired a scientist to perform an experiment using explosives on the property, which ended up failing. However, the experiment brought in large crowds, and inspired Norton to open an amusement park, which had public swimming and rowing on the lake, a gazebo for lakeside band concerts, and several rides. In 1895, a casino was built on the property, which was the first permanent building at the site. Later that same year, the B...
